The Alumnae Association’s Mae Elizabeth Kilgo Spirit Award is presented to a Converse alumna who has kept the spirit of the College visible to other alumnae and her community through continued loyal service. This year’s recipient of the award is Nancy Hayes Wilkerson ’58. In nominating Nancy for the Mae Elizabeth Kilgo Spirit Award, a fellow classmate said she wanted to “recognize Nancy for her cheerleading abilities for the Class of ’58.”Nancy has been a Class Representative for a number of years and has served as a member of CARE (Converse Alumnae Recruitment Effort). Nancy’s community volunteer efforts are extensive. For the Mint Museum of Art (Charlotte, North Carolina), she served as a Docent for ten years. In this capacity, she provided tours and instruction for visitors, supervised and instructed new docents, served on the Docent Board and edited the organization’s newsletter. She remains an active member of the Friends of the Mint Museum for which she has served as President and Co-Chairman of the Travel Committee. For the North Carolina Certification Board for Social Workers, Nancy served as Treasurer. During her commitment to the Charlotte Speech and Hearing Clinic, she served on the organization’s Board, tested the hearing of five-year-olds and scheduled testing for kindergartens. An active member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, Nancy has served on its Administrative Board, Staff Parish Committee and Local Outreach Committee among others. She also helped with the church’s homeless shelter, Habitat for Humanity efforts and served as Girls Scout Leader. |
