Prospective first-year, transfer and international students:
High school seniors, home-schooled students, full-time transfer students and international students should follow these steps to complete the admission application. Please note the audition requirement for applicants to the Petrie School of Music.
1. Be aware of important deadlines.
Seniors should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible after January 1.
Freshmen Priority Deadline of April 1:
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as completed, and an admission decision is made within three to four weeks. Converse does not consider applicants for Early Action or Early Decision.
Freshmen Scholarship Deadline of January 15:
Students who wish to be considered for the maximum amount of academic scholarships and considered for invitation to our scholarship competition must submit their completed application (including transcripts, test scores, activities, essay and recommendation) by February 1st.
Transfer students - Priority date of June 1:
For priority advising and registration for fall semester, students should complete the application and submit all college transcripts by this date.
International Students - Application deadline June 1, deposit deadline of July 15:
International students should follow the application process for freshmen or transfers. They must submit the application along with a Declaration of Finances and appropriate test scores.
2. Complete the application and list of activities.
Students can submit a paper application, online application or download and print the application from this page. Please complete the list of activities, leadership positions held and how long you were involved in each organization. Students can include a separate list of activities or submit a resume along with their application.
3. Submit the appropriate recommendation form.
Freshmen and international students should submit the Guidance Counselor Recommendation form. Students may submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher in place of a Counselor Recommendation. Home-schooled students should submit the recommendation from someone who has collaborated with the student on the course curriculum. Transfer students should submit the Transfer Recommendation Form. The Guidance Counselor and Transfer Recommendation can be downloaded and printed from this page.
4. Submit your essay.
Students may choose one of the following two essays to answer in no fewer than 150 words. Please type your response to the essay and submit with your application. Please note your full name and high school on your essay.
1. Creativity and innovation are increasingly desirable skills in our ever-changing world. Converse develops leaders who ask new questions and create new ideas and solutions. Explain why developing your creative and innovative abilities is important and how it will impact your own leadership in your career and community.
2. Dexter Converse, the founder of Converse College, believed that, "the well being of any country depends much upon the culture of her women." Converse students are committed to leadership in their communities and to serving others. Please comment on Dexter Converse's belief and how you feel it applies to your future leadership and service.
5. Submit an Official Transcript.
6. Submit your test scores.
Applicants must send their SAT or ACT scores directly to Converse. The SAT code is 5121, and the ACT code is 3852. You can have scores sent from the ACT website or the SAT website.
Transfer students with more than 30 transferable semester hours or 45 quarter hours do not need to submit standardized test scores.
7. International Students
Converse College requires that you have your international educational credentials evaluated by one of several agencies. Students may choose from these organizations:
- World Education Services (WES)
High school students must submit a Document-by-Document report, transfer students must submit a Course-by-Course report.
- Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
High school students must submit a General evaluation, transfer students must submit a Course-by-Course evaluation.
- Joseph Silny & Associates
High school students must submit a Document-by-Document evaluation, transfer students must submit a University Course-by-Course evaluation.
TOEFL Scores
All international students whose native language is not English must submit an official TOEFL score for admission consideration. Australian, British and Canadian students do not need to submit the TOEFL. International applicants who score a 500 or higher on the Critical Reading portion of the SAT or a comparable score on the ACT may have their TOEFL requirement waived.
For scholarship consideration international students must submit SAT or ACT test scores as well as a TOEFL score.
Please Note:
International students must submit their Declaration of Finances Form along with a statement from their bank before they can be admitted to Converse. International students must demonstrate that they have sufficient funding, minus any scholarships awarded by Converse, to attend Converse for their first year of study.
8. Schedule an audition
If applying to the Petrie School of Music, applicants must also schedule an audition and complete the Audition Registration form. Learn more about audition requirements. Students unable to audition in person must submit a high-quality audition recording. VHS or DVD is preferred, although cassette or CD will be accepted. The recording must clearly identify the applicant's name, instrument, and audition repertoire. Recordings will not be returned.
Music scholarships are awarded on the basis of talent and academic achievement. If you are majoring in music or double majoring in music and another field, you are eligible to be considered for a music scholarship.
