English/Creative and Professional Writing
At Converse, students develop the abilities and skills needed to understand literature’s diversity and scope. With opportunities to experience all genres of literature - from creative nonfiction to ballads -  English majors gain a comprehensive understanding of the written word.

In addition to classroom involvement, students in the English department have opportunities to:

  • attend and participate in numerous fiction, poetry, and non-fiction readings
  • spend time both informally and formally with a variety of visiting writers and lecturers
  • contribute to the award-winning newspaper, The Conversationalist
  • work on the editorial staff of the student-run literary magazine, Concept
  • submit their own creative work for publication in Concept
  • become more skilled writers and editors through serving as peer consultants in the Writing Center

In addition, the Converse College Creative Writing Program, led by professional writers, provides serious, aspiring women writers an intensive and challenging apprenticeship in creative and professional writing enriched by the study of literature.  The BFA in Creative and Professional Writing is the only degree of its kind in South Carolina, and one of only fourteen in the country. For the committed writing student, the BFA offers professional, comprehensive, and rigorous training in the art of writing as well as preparation for careers and graduate study.

The English and Creative Writing Programs are designed to offer students an exciting, sound liberal arts education based on the belief that writers and critics develop by understanding the historical and intellectual contexts of the traditions in which they work. The programs will prepare students seeking careers as educators, professional writers, editors, publishers or journalists.
