Author of essays in several anthologies, including The Clinton Presidency (1993), The Presidential Election of 1992 (1992), Lessons of the Bush Defeat (1992), Contemporary Conservatism (1990), How Does the Constitution Secure Religious Liberty? (1987), Power, Principles, and Interest (1984), and an article, "Women in the Novels of Nathaniel Hawthorne"  in Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy. His book manuscript on the discretionary powers of the presidency, Executive Privileges, is under consideration by a major publisher. He has participated in many NEH and Liberty Fund symposia. He was a contract speech writer for the Secretaries of Defense under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, a staff associate at the George Marshall Institute, executive board member of the South Carolina Humanities Council, President of the Westgate Training and Consultation Network, and he is President of the South Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Scholars. He received the Kathryne Amelia Brown Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2000.
