Dr. Elena Mendez has been professor of physics at Converse since the fall of 1990. She received her B.S. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her Ph.D. from Duke University. Her training is in experimental elementary particle physics. Her dissertation dealt with charmed quarks, one of the types of fundamental building blocks of the universe. In recent years she has developed an interest in the relationship between science and religion and has studied different cultures' cosmologies and views of the universe. She has traveled to Belize, Guatemala and Australia to study ancient astronomy and is currently researching possible astronomical alignments in Costa Rica. She teaches courses in physics, astronomy, and ancient astronomy.
