Dr. Hughes has recently completed an economic impact study examining the effect Converse College has on the local economy.
The study estimates that Converse had a total dollar impact on the local economy of $38.5 million during the 2000-2001 academic year. In a separate study, he and Professor Maynard have estimated that approximately 23% of the area of the city of Spartanburg is owned by tax-exempt organizations and have offered alternatives for raising additional revenues for the city.

Over the past several winter terms, Dr. Hughes has accompanied students on study/travel programs to various locations. He and Professor Maynard have recently returned from Prague, Brussels, and Amsterdam where the group examined the European Union and the prospects for expansion of the EU. In January 2004, Professors Hughes and Maynard are planning another study/travel program, “Eco-Economics,” in a visit to the Andean highlands near Quito, Ecuador, and to the Galapagos Islands.
