Dr. Howe began teaching at Converse in 1972 and served as department chair from 1973 until 1998. He teaches both chemistry and geology courses and has taken geology students on travel/study programs to the American Southwest. He has authored or co-authored several successful National Science Foundation grants and one Foundation for Independent Higher Education grant. His research interests are in the areas of laser applications in solving chemical problems, computational chemistry, polymer chemistry, and environmental problems (including radioactive waste). Because most of his research involves the introduction of new laboratory pedagogy into the undergraduate curriculum, he frequently collaborates with students on these projects. He is author/co-author of one monograph, 15 journal articles, and has made numerous scholarly presentations at state, regional and national professional meetings. He was recipient of the Kathryne Amelia Brown Award for Excellent Teaching (1974), the SC Distinguished Professor’s Award (1996), and the SC Junior Academy of Science Michener Service Award (1995 and 1998).
