Biology

Biology is a diverse field, and the courses taught at Converse reflect that diversity. Students learn about the internal structure and functions of organisms in such courses as Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Human Physiology, and Comparative Anatomy. They also learn about the broad spectrum of biology through classes such as Botany, Zoology, Ecology, and Evolution. Most biology classes at Converse include a laboratory. Some of the laboratories are in the science building, while others take students into the natural world.

The Biology major is rigorous, and because of it, the Biology Department won the Curriculum Innovation Award, given at the May 2003 commencement. Biology majors take 32 credits of biology courses along with courses in math, chemistry, and physics. Within biology, they must take a variety of courses that will expose them to such things as diversity of plants and animals, structure and function of cells, genetics, and evolution. All biology majors receive research experience, and they give scientific presentations in the Junior and Senior Seminar courses.

The Biology Department also offers courses to non-majors, including Concepts in Biology (BIO 100) and Spring Flora (BIO 120).
