Travel Programs

The Art of Paris, Rome, and Florence

Travel abroad is considered by the department an important educational tool for budding artists, designers, educators, and art historians. Travel abroad programs are offered periodically in studio art, art history and interior design with destinations in Russia, France, Italy, Greece, Spain, France, and Holland.

Upcoming January 2008 term travel-abroad includes The Art of Paris, Rome, and Florence with Professor Mac Boggs and Travel to Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris with art historian Dr. Suzanne Schuweiler-Daab.

Studio Art Professor Mac and Education Professor Ansley Boggs took 18 students to France and Italy in January 2007. Students enrolled in one or more of the following courses: ART 101: Studio Art Appreciation, ART 317: Studio Art, ART 307: Art History Travel, EDU 327/527: Teaching Through the Arts, or the Clinical II requirement for education majors. After visiting the cities of Paris, Rome, and Florence, the students took advantage of free days to travel to other exciting places such as Venice, Sorrento, Pompeii, Bologna, and Naples.

Art Travel in Paris

This is a travel program designed to expose the student to the current and historical art collections of the museums, galleries, and architecture located in Paris, Rome, and Florence. Through daily visits to view the art and from various reading sources, students are provided an overview of styles, movements, and content associated with both contemporary and historical art. Students expand upon their experiences through daily discussions, journaling, and the creation of individual art work. Following are some of the students’ journal entries that describe this incredible program:

“I just want to say THANK YOU so much for making it possible to go on this trip. It was truly a life changing experience, both personally and professionally.”

“We went on a night cruise on the Seine River. It was incredible! Then we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Paris—the City of Lights! Wow!”

“Florence is so beautiful, I wanted to cry!”

“I really have no appropriate words to describe the beauty and genius that is the Sistine Chapel. The magnitude of this work is mind blowing!”

“How Michelangelo painted the chapel’s ceiling and how he produced such beautiful images is just impossible to comprehend. I could have stared at the ceiling for hours. I could still be there looking at it now.”

“Michelangelo’s David is nothing short of exquisite. I was in awe of the size of this piece and the detail with which it was sculpted. It’s an incredible piece of art work that has to be seen in person to be truly believed and appreciated.”

The Department of Art and Design offers many exciting opportunities for students to travel abroad and within the United States. During the January 2006 Term students have the option of traveling to New York City or the New Mexico Ghost Ranch.

In New York City students experience the many galleries and museums with side trips to Broadway plays and favorite historical landmarks. The Ghost Ranch, the home of late Georgia O’Keefe, provides students with the opportunity to experience studio classes in jewelry making, photography, ceramics, watercolor, and painting. Students exhibit their work in the Sneakers Gallery on campus as a finale to their experience.
