History
Converse College offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Art History. The Art History program provides the student with an understanding of the human experience as expressed in art throughout the ages. The upper-level classes are taught in a combination lecture and discussion format that examines the formal style of the periods and artistic development of the artists, as well as the philosophy behind the art, and the artist’s social, cultural and political context. The student develops analytic, research, writing and public speaking skills in order to communicate effectively her understanding of the art.
The art history courses are enhanced with field trips to museums and galleries, and guest lectures. The Converse College collection of 20th century prints and the Milliken Gallery exhibits provide an opportunity to see the art styles that are discussed in class. Travel study programs also offer students an opportunity to view art first hand. Trips have included the study of American Art with a trip to Williamsburg and Charlottesville, Virginia and Washington D.C., and an “Artist’s Tour of France” where students visited art museums and the sites where Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso lived and worked.
Museum internships are a vital part of the art history program at Converse College. They are designed to broaden the student’s experience and professional contacts in the art field. Some of the internships have included art auction houses such as Sotheby’s in New York, and art museums throughout the United States, including Atlanta, Georgia, Washington D.C., Charlotte, North Carolina, Knoxville, Tennessee, Colorado, and Texas.
In addition to graduating with a well-rounded liberal arts education, the art history major at Converse College is equipped with the knowledge and skills to compete successfully in graduate programs and professional careers. A major in art history must complete 33 credit hours of course work in art history.
