Art Education

“No one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts.” – National Standards for Art Education

The Art Education curriculum is designed to prepare college students for certification in art at the elementary through secondary school levels and to develop their competence both as creative artists and teachers. The program is designed to prepare prospective art teachers so that they should:

  • exhibit a good attitude toward art, teaching, and children 
  • demonstrate an understanding of basic art theory as well as  knowledge of media and techniques for creative expression
  • be personally involved in the study of art and art production, and understand current developmental theories of child art relating to understanding and production of art
  • understand how to plan lesson, units, and correlate art curriculum to meet the South Carolina Art Frameworks and the National Standards for Art
  • understand the function of evaluation in curriculum development, instructional planning, and implementation
  • have knowledge of and demonstrate various methods of instruction in art

Art EducationThe degree offered is a B.A. in art education with a minor in education.

In order to become certified in art education (K-12) the prospective art teacher must complete a sequence of courses that includes 40 hours of course work in the art major. In addition, prospective teachers in art must complete 27 hours of education and psychology course work in the minor of education. The art education majors are encouraged to become a member of the student chapter of the Art Education Association.

The student takes the PRAXIS II exam before completion of student teaching. Student teaching is arranged in public schools on the elementary and secondary level.
