Study Abroad Update

International study is an important facet of a liberal arts education. Through the Office of International Studies, students may design their own curriculum, choosing from a variety of study/travel programs.

Often, prior language training is not required. Most students enroll in institutes or universities in programs designed for foreign students. They meet young people from throughout the world as well as students from the target culture. Credits apply toward graduation, and grades count toward the student's Converse grade point average.

SPAIN
Improve language skills and learn more about Spanish culture by spending a semester or a year in Spain. Converse students study in Madrid or Toledo through cooperative arrangements with Saint Louis University in Spain and the Toledo International Program of Spanish Language, Latin American, and European Studies.
COSTA RICA
Through an agreement with the University of Kansas and the University of Costa Rica, Converse students can study for one term or for an entire year in San Jose, Costa Rica. The program focuses on Spanish language and literature as well as biological sciences, business, and Latin American Studies.
FRANCE
Learn more about French culture while studying in the south of France at Avignon or Aix-en-Provence. You will live in private homes in both cities during your stay. The program at Avignon requires a minimum of four semesters of French for admission; the study in Aix-en-Provence requires completion of first-year French.
ICELAND
Two Converse students who are eligible for honors courses are able to attend the University of Iceland for a semester or a full year. Students are  awarded an Honors Scholarship to pay for round trip airfare and are not charged additional fees above their regular Converse tuition. In addition, one Converse faculty member per term is invited to teach a specially designed, four-week course at the University of Iceland. “The University is a wonderful place for research with many materials and courses available in English,” said Dr. Barker. “Iceland is not as cold as one may think, and its society is the most literate in the world. Iceland has a culture steeped in literature, art, music, and cutting-edge science and technology, in addition to a natural environment unlike any other place on earth.” Read the Iceland Exchange Handbook for additional information.
