UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW STUDY ABROAD
Converse College's Nisbet Honors Program is a member of the Principia Consortium, a group of small liberal arts college honors programs permitted to send honors students to a special honors study abroad program at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. The University was founded in 1451 and is an internationally recognized institution with prestigious programs in the sciences and humanities. The Nisbet Honors Program offers the opportunity for students to study at this institution.
Converse honors students may enroll for fall semester through International Programs. Our program will begin in the fall of 2009.
Sophomores and juniors interested in studying abroad at Glasgow next fall should view the materials on the following link and should contact Dr. Laura Brown for more information. Link: http://www.berry.edu/provost/honors/glasgow.asp
Other aspects of the Glasgow program that may interest you:
Glasgow’s reputation as one of the best universities in western Europe to study the sciences will allow honors science majors some options for study abroad not usually available. Premedical students will have the option of taking anatomy with a world-renowned anatomy professor. This undergrad anatomy course will also allow students to dissect human corpses, not usually an option for undergraduate students. Second-level courses taught in the Faculty of Biomedical and Life Sciences are listed here.
Service learning, performing arts courses, business, and liberal arts courses are also available. Art courses are taught as well. See this link for more information: The Glasgow School of Arts: http://www.gsa.ac.uk/gsa.cfm?pid=1.

Nisbet Honors Program Travel Fund Grant
Recognizing that study-travel contributes significantly to students understanding cultures beyond their own, the Honors Program seeks to make funds available to help honors students to travel. An honors program student is eligible for up to $500 once during her undergraduate career, provided that she meets the other guidelines below and that the program has adequate funds for the number of students who wish to travel that year. Seniors are given preference if a large number of students apply to travel in a given year.
SPECIAL NOTE: Because of special, one-time outside funding for international travel and the impact of the economic downturn on Chapman funding, we may expand the cap up to $1000 for study-travel for this year ONLY.
1) Seniors applying for Nisbet travel funds must have completed at least the junior honors seminar (HON 399H) and three other graded honors courses by the end of the fall term.
2) Juniors must have completed two graded honors courses by the end of the fall term of the academic year in which they plan to travel.
3) Sophomores who have enough credits to be counted as juniors may also apply.
4) Normally, freshmen are not considered, but this year only freshmen may apply if they can demonstrate commitment to take at least one more honors course this spring.
5) Students must be traveling with a Converse study-travel program or a related study-travel program. Please see a co-director for details.
6) Students must provide the co-directors with proof of their commitment to travel, such as an e-mail from the sponsoring professor verifying that the student is registered for the course.
For travel in winter or spring, please submit the following to Mrs. Melody Boland or Dr. Laura Feitzinger Brown by October 1, 2009:
- proof of your commitment to travel (see #6)
- a list of honors courses you have already taken or are currently taking and other participation in the HP. Indicate how you plan to complete your honors coursework.
- a letter detailing why and how you believe this trip will enhance your education.
For funding for travel in Fall 2010 to the University of Glasgow through Converse’s membership in the Principia Consortium, students who have been allowed to proceed to the application stage for Glasgow may provide the same information in an application to Mrs. Boland or Dr. Brown by February 1, 2010.
