ADMISSIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Admissions
Admission to the program is competitive and is by invitation only. To be considered, students must complete an application to Converse and be accepted. A select number of entering freshmen are invited into the program based on their outstanding high school performance and their potential for success in college.

Students who do well once they have begun their studies at Converse also are considered for the program; freshmen and sophomores must earn at least a 3.5 GPA after taking 12 hours at Converse to be invited to apply.

Requirements
To complete the Nisbet Honors Program and be recognized at graduation, students must satisfy the following requirements:

Achievement
Students must perform well in academic courses after entering the Honors Program.  To remain in the program, you should maintain a GPA above 3.0 or receive grades of B- or better in honors courses.

Coursework
The Nisbet Honors Program is interdisciplinary and aims to give students a broad base of knowledge.  Students must take honors courses in several departments and with a variety of professors.

Honors students take the following courses:

  • Freshman Honors Seminar
Students may replace this course with another honors course if they enter after their freshman fall.
  • Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar
Students who successfully complete a Freshman Honors course take these small interdisciplinary courses. Professors from different fields team-teach these courses.  Recent offerings include “The Sixties in Music and Historical Memory,” "The New South in History and Literature,” “Music and Poetry,” and “Money and Movies.”
  • Junior Honors Seminar
This one-credit course helps a student prepare for graduate and professional schools, apply for competitive scholarships, and plan ahead. Priority for this course is given to juniors and seniors.
  • Either a Senior Honors Thesis or two more honors experiences
These could include two additional honors courses, an honors directed independent study, or some combination of both. Generally students may not take two honors directed independent studies to count for her last honors courses.
