| ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA |
| Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society for the recognition of high academic achievement in the freshman year. The Converse Chapter was installed on March 15, 1982. To be eligible for Alpha Lambda Delta, the student must have a cumulative average of no less than 3.5 and carry a full class load through the short term of the freshman year. The organization performs a variety of services, including tutorial assistance for freshmen. |

| ALPHA PSI OMEGA |
| Alpha Psi Omega is a national honorary fraternity in Theatre Art. It is dedicated to the advancement and promotion of Theatre on the college campus and is an honor society for those who demonstrate a consistently high standard of work in Theatre. Students may qualify for induction into the Pi Chapter by fulfilling specific academic and production-related criteria, copies of which may be obtained from the Chapter Advisor. |

| CONVERSE SCHOLARS |
| Annually, about ten members of the rising junior class are designated as Converse Scholars. To be eligible, students either must have a GPA of at least 3.5 and be recommended by a faculty member OR must rank in the top 15% of their class. For final selection, a student should display educational values and personal character consistent with the founder’s ideal, and her academic pursuits should show not only her commitment to academic excellence but also her understanding of the value of the liberal arts. Final selection is based on individual interviews with a faculty committee appointed by the Dean. In addition to being an honorary orgnaization, Converse Scholars meet several times a year to discuss academic topics and occasionally serve the college in such activities as assisting academic advisors as aids. |

| CRESCENT |
| Crescent is a sophomore organization whose purpose is one of leadership and service to Converse College and the surrounding community. Each year Crescent works on a service project and additional monthly projects. Crescent also contributes a minimum of $200.00 each year to the general scholarship fund at Converse and sponsors the Crescent award, given to an outstanding sophomore outside of Crescent. Qualifications for membership include unselfish leadership and service, both potential and recognized, depth of character, genuine interest, and satisfactory scholarship (GPA of 2.5 or above). The Crescent motto is: "What we keep we lose, only what we give remains our own." |

| DELTA OMICRON |
| Delta Omicron is a professional music fraternity founded in 1909 at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Alpha Epsilon Chapter was established at Converse College in 1966. The purpose of the fraternity is to encourage the highest possible scholastic attainment, excellence of individual performance, and appreciation of good music, to create and foster fellowship through music, to develop character and leadership, and to give material aid to worthy music students. Membership is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students of outstanding scholarship and musicianship. |

| THE GAMMA SIGMA SOCIETY |
| The Gamma Sigma Society is the honorary scholarship society of the College of Arts and Sciences of Converse College. It was organized on April 23, 1923, by faculty members who were members of Phi Beta Kappa. The purpose of the Society is to encourage scholarship among the students of Converse College and to honor by election to membership in the Society those seniors, not to exceed ten percent of the graduating class, who have demonstrated superior scholastic attainment throughout their entire college course. To be eligible for election, students must be candidates for a bachelors degree in the College of Arts and Sciences and must be majoring in an area of the liberal arts or sciences. Criteria for selection to Gamma Sigma are based on the Phi Beta Kappa standards. |

| KAPPA DELTA EPSILON |
| Kappa Delta Epsilon is a national honorary organization. Its purpose is to promote the cause of education by fostering a spirit of fellowship, high standards of scholastic attainment, and professional ideals among members. Membership in the Converse Chapter is by invitation to undergraduate applicants who have 1) a major or minor in education, 2) at least 45 semester hours, and 3) a GPA of 3.5 or better. |

| MORTAR BOARD GAVEL CHAPTER |
| Mortar Board is a national honor society of college seniors whose purpose, in part, is "to support the ideals of the university, to advance a spirit of scholarship, to recognize and encourage leadership, and to provide the opportunity for a meaningful exchange of ideas as individuals and as a group." The Converse Gavel Chapter strives to supplement and stimulate intellectual activity on campus and in the community-at-large. To accomplish its purposes, the Gavel Chapter sponsors a Dean’s List Tea, a bi-annual PROBE Symposium, and other lecture series throughout the year. |
| Qualifications for membership in Mortar Board include outstanding leadership, scholarship, and service. All juniors with a cumulative scholastic average of 3.0 or above or top 35% of her class are considered for membership. Selection and tapping of new members occurs in the spring of their junior year. |

| PROBE STEERING COMMITTEE |
| Every year, the GAVEL Chapter of Mortar Board sponsors a symposium which explores a topic relevant to the college community. The PROBE topic is chosen by the group with emphasis on the National Mortar Board’s National Concern topic, also chosen bi-annually. PROBE is an opportunity to participate in intellectual discussion outside of class and with members of the community. One of the Mortar Board faculty advisors serves as the PROBE advisor. The PROBE Steering Committee is a subcommittee of Mortar Board. |

| PHI SIGMA LOTA |
| Phi Sigma Iota is an international foreign language honor society. Its primary objectives are (1) the recognition of above average ability and attainments in languages and literature; (2) the stimulation of advanced work and individual research in this field; and (3) the promotion of a friendship and understanding among our nation and the nations using these languages. Students eligible for membership must meet the following requirements: Junior or Senior standing (Sophomore in exceptional circumstances); a curriculum with an emphasis in foreign language; at least a 3.0 average in their entire college work, as well as in all courses in language; and completion of at least one course in foreign language at the third-year level or beyond. Membership is by faculty recommendation and invitation. |

| PI GAMMA MU |
| The purpose of Pi Gamma Mu is to improve scholarship in the social sciences and to provide an equal opportunity for an exchange of ideas between individuals involved in the various fields of social science. New members are voted on by present members. Only students with at least twenty semester hours of social science and with an average grade therein of not less than "B" are considered for membership. |

| PI KAPPA LAMBDA |
| "Strive always for the beautiful" is the motto of Pi Kappa Lambda, National Music Honor Society founded in 1918 at Northwestern University. Phi Chapter was chartered in 1938. Membership is by invitation only to outstanding juniors, seniors and graduate students majoring in music who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and musicianship. Juniors in the top ten percent of their class and seniors in the top twenty percent of their class are eligible for consideration. Graduate students who have at least 2/3 As in their degree programs are also eligible for consideration. |

| STUDENT ALUMNAE SOCIETY |
| The Converse College Student Alumnae Society members are committed to serving as ambassadors for Converse College alumnae events, assisting the Alumnae Office with the organization of campus alumnae events (such as Reunion Weekend and Golden Club Luncheon), raising funds for the Converse College Undergraduate Scholarship Fund and increasing alumnae career networking between alumnae and current students. Qualifications for membership include sincerity and commitment to the purpose of the organization. All members of the sophomore, junior and senior classes with a satisfactory scholarship (2.0 or better) who have been nominated by a current professor of staff member are eligible to apply. |

| STUDENT MARSHALS |
| Student Marshals are chosen from the rising junior class each year on the basis of academic excellence. They are among the most honored students on campus. They officially represent the College in the formal ceremonies of the academic year, including Formal Opening, Founder’s Day, Award’s Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement, where they add order and dignity to the proceedings. In addition, Marshals serve at other functions such as the Festival of Lessons and Carols and certain required assemblies. The Head Marshal for the College of Arts and Sciences and the Head Marshal for the School of Music are elected by the group at their first meeting of the year in September. |

| THETA ALPHA KAPPA |
| Theta Alpha Kappa is a national honor society for professors and students of Religious Studies/Theology. The Converse Chapter was chartered in 1996. Its primary purpose is to further the study of Religious Studies and Theology by embracing the following areas: God, Humanity, and Community. Theta Alpha Kappa encourages excellence in research, teaching, publication, and exchange of learning among scholars. Qualifications for membership include a total of two semesters at Converse, completion of 12 credits in Religious Studies/Theology, a GPA of at least 3.5 in Religious Studies/Theology, a cumulative scholastic average of 3.0, and standing in the upper 35% of her class in scholarship. The Converse chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa holds a formal induction ceremony for new initiates. Last year two seniors presented papers at the South Carolina Academy of Religion. Theta Alpha Kappa periodically sponsors an intramural sports team. |

Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities is a national organization whose purpose is to recognize the merit and accomplishments of outstanding student leaders chosen from over 1500 schools and universities in the United States and several foreign nations.

| A student-faculty committee selects the members of Who’s Who. Selection is based on academic achievement, service to the school and community, leadership in extracurricular activities, and potential for continued success. |
